Japanese Tea Garden

The Japanese Tea Garden is a much revered City of San Antonio historic park and civic amenity created from an abandoned rock quarry.  The Gardens have a rich and varied history that had to be understood for a successful restoration of the Pagoda and Jingu Tea House.  The Design Team studied the original design vision, the incompatible changes over the years, and Japanese traditional building and lighting techniques.  The restoration work consisted of replacing non-traditional wood shingle roofing with palm thatch, augmenting structural supports and repointing stone masonry columns.  A specific lighting system was designed utilizing the original red oriental lanterns but with night dimming capabilities.  The project also prioritized environmental stewardship and minimized its impact on the surrounding habitat. As a result, the Japanese Tea Garden not only regained its former glory but also serves as a model for sustainable architectural restoration in harmony with nature.
